2-12-18 Worldview
…I have been thinking of story, language, a summary of what is, a reduction of what is, a construction, not whole or truth, an abstraction and of course human relationship within this.
Is there any human relationship without the attempt to explain and share a worldview? Worldview seems very large, but it doesn’t have to be more than our interpretation of everyday reality. What has happened to you, what has happened to me? How do we tell what we see and think about?
One tends to think that the ground of our being is physical, material. This ground in the natural world has a certain stability or a slow changefulness, or pattern to its behavior. We count on this to manage our actions in relation to its movement.
The psychological is not as easy to define in position or to predict response. It seems elsewhere, not material, not quite physical, but of course, although thought may seem to be a spiritual manifestation, it belongs to this material existence. While the body acts in alignment with the natural world, the psychological insists on creating meaning, explaining, showing connections, comparing and being in conflict over what has happened or will happen.
This body will move in a certain direction, aiming for a certain place, but the mind may be elsewhere, inventing its own reality.
When two beings come into the same space their interpretations of reality will interact. Who will present, who will listen, who will respond to what is said? One tentatively or forcefully probes or declares the present reality. It can be built upon or denied and rejected. Is it a simple transfer of information, or acknowledgment of being, or interruption of one’s equilibrium, a declaration of affection or a denial of one’s existence?
Can two people acknowledge that the meeting of bodies may be simple compared to the meeting of minds (which we may be very apprehensive of)?
When someone strongly, confidently, and forcefully offers their worldview it may give certainty and security to the speaker and the listener. Or the listener may find their own worldview at odds, not aligning and therefore they feel uncertain and confused and ready to defend their own position as if they were defending their own body. Sometimes we just want to get away from the speaker as we don’t agree, or we are not ready or able to defend our position as our facts may not align. Our assumptions or goals may be different.
Where does this worldview exist? The contents may seem to reside within me, but if someone else also holds these views, are they personal, do they extend into the larger group mind? It’s not a question of physical location, or form and structure. Our worldview, our reality is a shapeshifter, it dissipates quickly or may hold its meaning for many years. It may seem to be a personal construction, but it is really being fed by shared knowledge and opinion. Why is it so determined and insistent, while also being frightened and defended? The mind and the body are mutually dependent, a forced collaboration. Are the two, the mind and the body out of balance? Have they gone in their own direction, refusing to acknowledge the truth of the other?
I think that this is the case. The body is very restricted. The mind refuses to accept limitations and that may put it in delusion. The false reality it creates will be unable to respond adequately to the circumstances and needs of mind and body. This is more than a personal problem as we struggle to live in harmony with the larger social body and the limitations of the earth.
